Why?

Well, there are lots of reasons to start learning the guitar - or in fact any musical instrument for that matter. You have come as far as this page so let me keep it short - and sweet! Please note that there are likely many more reasons but I'll just go for what I see as the 'main' ones!

Playing music is really good fun.

Yes. First one to note, this! The most important reason to pick up an instrument is that with some guidance and instruction you can quickly find yourself immersed in the pleasure of producing music. it is surprising how quickly you can learn something that is recognisably musical!

It is something you can do on your own... and is also a fantastic way to meet new friends.

I'd call this win/win - wouldn't you? There is a fairly even split among my students between those that simply wish to play for themselves and their own enjoyment and those that are actively engaged on the music scene here in Sheffield. Playing solo gigs, in duos or in bands. You might of course start only with the intention of playing for yourself and encounter someone to jam with, once your confidence increases. No downside!

It is good for your brain!

Fact - any number of academic papers and resources back this up. Albert Einstein once said: “Life without playing music is inconceivable to me. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music... I get (the) most joy in life out of music”. I wouldn't have bothered arguing with him. Would you have?

It does wonders for your self-esteem.

Playing music can give you an immense sense of achievement - right from striking that very first chord onwards. It promotes a sense of well-being and happiness that other common every day 'passive' activities i.e. looking at social media, watching television simply don't.

It is for anyone.

Very important one this. I have lost count over the years of people saying "I'm too old", "my hands are the wrong shape", "I hated music lessons at school" (most people seemed to have done!) and "I had lessons and I had to learn things I didn't like".

So in order - age is irrelevant: I have students who have started in their late 70s and thoroughly enjoy our lessons.

Next: everyone appears to have "the wrong shaped hands" Not true! And posture, technique, and all that goes with professional instruction can prove this! Also, guitars come in many different shapes and sizes anyway!

Music lessons at school were intended to please everyone and as a result, pleased no-one! At least in my experience. These lessons are your own. I won't insist on you learning any particular song. Merely make suggestions based on a. your passions and interests and b. at what level you are at any given moment. All the necessary guidance will be given to make you a full, rounded and knowledgeable musician - with the aim of you being equipped to play the music you love.
